Costumes

Costumes, although important, will not play such a vital part in this music video than it perhaps might in others.

A very elaborate video for music of certain genre might require lots of special costumes, but mine will simply feature normal people in a normal setting. If anything looks out of the ordinary, the video will not look legitimate. Because of this, regular clothing is all that is needed.

From the image above, we see that clothing can have an influence on how the viewer visualizes the setting or environment. Although the colour tone gives us the largest sense of weather and temperature, the only direct indication that is it cold is from what the character wears. If the colour tone were to be changed to make the scene warmer, the clothing choice would not fit; warm clothes do not go with warm weather. This tells us that these two factors need to be matched for the scene to give off the desired impression. Increasing colour saturation can increase the temperature as it mimics how direct sunlight can make colours more rich.

People often express their personality and mood with what colours they wear.
  • Red colours often connote danger, desire, and love.
  • Orange and Yellow connote joy and happiness.
  • Blue colours give a tranquil and soft feeling.
  • Black has associations with the unknown, death, and sadness.
It is clear then what should be used for each theme throughout the video. Warm colour tones are to be used for when the main character is with his partner, as the upbeat connotations of orange and yellow colours will reflect on the character's content mood. Cold and black colours would be used for the times when his situation is going downhill.

Scott, the actor, will need smart clothing for the scenes where he is at work. Because there is only what's onscreen to show the audience parts of his life, we can't very easily show that he works in a place that has a casual non-uniform policy. If he isn't wearing something that looks like he's at work, people won't think that he's at work.

Clothing is one thing that needs to be taken into account regarding continuity. If one scene will be shot over many days, the clothes that the actors wear will need to be the same. This eliminates any sudden jumps in how people look; films looks more professional without sloppy continuity.
